Give This Girl a Pencil

Maybe it comes from all the books she's read; big, fat classic books with long words and excellent writing. Maybe it comes from a lot of focused, agonizing, hard work. Probably both, but also a gift, neatly wrapped in brown paper with a gold organdy bow, given to her by God, who knew how much she would both love and learn from a lifetime of writing.

She, in my important opinion, is settling into her own style. Last summer she read a book that solidified how she wants to write. Her favorite book ever. I read it. How could I not? It was perky, and sweet, with a little edge in just the right places. You were smarter and a little deeper from having read it. I'm so glad she isn't flowery or sappy or predictable. She writes with surprise and a little twist.

She's been taking a Children's Literature course by mail. She works so hard on those assignments. Writing is painful, especially to those like Kaisha who know there is a right way to say something and a dull way to say something. Her expectations of herself are high, maybe too high, but it causes her strive hard for excellence.

There is so much more I could tell you, but I don't want to give away her secrets. Just trust me, she's clever and the world will be a better place when she's published.
